At the initiative of the International Lions Club which is involved at various national and international levels in providing concrete solutions to social, medical, educational and environmental problems, the "Canard de la Sarthe," a unique operation at Le Mans, will add some fun to the banks of the Sarthe river!
Sunday, 12 June at 11:30 a.m., as a prelude to Scrutineering at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, 20,000 rubber ducks will be released in the Sarthe river between the "Yssoir" bridge (in the extension of the tunnel) and the "Capitainerie" port for a unique race. The fastest little duck on the water will win for its happy owner a car. The 999 following ducks will receive a variety of prizes (scooter, electric bike, television, gift certificates...). The ACO is associated with this fun and entertaining "race" for charity by offering lots: 1 ride in a Pescarolo prototype, 10 tickets to the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans, 10 VIP passes to Scrutineering, 10 karting sessions and 10 simulator sessions.
The big duck release will be one of the highlights of the event. The send-off in the water will be carried out in the Le Mans style of starts used at the 24 Hours until 1969: all the operators of the machinery who will free the 20,000 little ducks will have to cross the bridge at the lowering of the French flag to release them over the parapet.
The funds collected will help locally the Arche center for functional rehabilitation and re-education, situated near Saint-Saturnin, to purchase a chalet but also as support to disabled individuals by offering them the possibility of adopting a companion dog.
To take part in the adventure and cheer on a duck, a sponsorship form must be filled out here for 5€ per duck. It will be an exciting event to experience as a family or among friends before checking out the cars at the 24 Hours of Le Mans at the nearby Place de la République.
Info: Cost of a rubber duck: 5€. Purchase at Le Maine Libre, the Librairie THUARD, the Librairie BULLE, Le Piliers aux clés, CE Renault, Office de Tourisme du Mans, Auchan Le Mans.
